Though there are many theories about the origin of poker, the most popular belief is that it derived its name from the French card game Poque. There are reports suggesting that the game was first played in New Orleans in 1829, with a deck of 20 cards consisting of all cards that had value of 10 or above, i.e. four each of ace, king, queen, jack and ten with four players betting on which player's hand had the most valuable cards. Jonathan H. Green's book, "An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling" (G. B. Zieber, Philadelphia, 1843), indicted that from there the game proliferated throughout the country through Mississippi riverboats, where gambling was a regular pastime.
7 card stud poker is a varied version of stud poker. The 7 card stud poker was rated as the most played poker variant until the Texas Hold Em gained its present popularity, among the home games in the United States. Played with 7 cards, you need to make a five-card hand.
For playing the 7 card stud poker, you need a deck of 52 cards and chips. Two to seven players may play the game, though eight persons may also play, but would need special rules for the last cards dealt, when no player folds. Betting is clockwise, starting from the player with the lowest card showing. Once all the players have put in the ante, the dealer deals three cards, which are called hole cards, two of them with their face down, and the third card with face up. Now, each player looks at his three-hole cards and the player holding the lowest card, places the bring-in bet. Players to the left of the low card-holder will in turn call, raise or fold their cards.
After all the players have finished betting, the dealer deals the next card to each player. This is again a face up card, also known as the "fourth street." Once again, the betting round starts from the player with the highest card that shows. All other rounds follow this order of betting. The fifth card is also dealt with face up and is called the "river," and more betting follows. Next, the sixth card is dealt. It is also a face up card. Again, there is a round of betting. Finally, the seventh and the last card is dealt with its face down. A final round of betting follows, at the end of which the players show their hands. The player with the highest dealt hand is the winner.
